Is This The End My Friend?

I doubt it but hopefully that caught your interest. The news since the last post is a mixture of ups and downs. Jobs have been completed but the actual film is still not complete but all that remains is the audio realm of things. To say audio is my expertise would be laughable (mind you saying that about any aspect of movie making would be a joke but don't say that too loud because we need to sell 500 dvds) but I struggle on and the other members of the team hammer away at their tasks as well. As for specific updates the dvd release is almost a lock for October 20-31 and expect there to be special limited discs of some sort selling at a higher rate. There will also be a showing of the film on the release date somewhere in Lethbridge that hopefully we can get a good enough turnout for, we will have a draw for prizes as well so it is possible you won't leave empty handed.

Well that is about all that is new on the 5205 front. The next post should have a release date and pre-order information, so keep your eye out for that. Until then make sure you are out supporting independent art.

The Business of The Harvestman

The final product is coming along but now we need to raise $1000 to get dvd replications finished. We are hoping we can make up some of the money on pre-orders and when we have a better idea of the release date as well as as a payment system setup we will start collecting orders. Until then if anyone has any fund raising ideas please send them our way, right now we are discussing a possible limited edition copy that would include extras at a higher cost. Also if those that are interested in purchasing a copy could post their interest so we could get an idea of whether or not the process is financially feasible that would be great. DVDs are slated to sell for $15 which means we would need to sell 67 copies, yikes!

2011 And the End is Near

No no I am not throwing my two cents into apocalyptic predictions (but it is going to be February 19th 2015 if anyone is interested), the end that I babble about is the end of The Harvestman. The footage is cut and is on it's way to the sound engineer, composer, color grader and credit designer for those gals and guys to put their own fingerprints on this all consuming project. I hesitate still on announcing a release date because, quite frankly, I have really not the slightest clue how long those jobs should and will take and since I was contracted to have a final cut by the first of October 2009 (looks like I messed up and missed by let's say a few days) I am in no place to make hard and fast deadlines. We will start taking pre-orders for those that are interested once the release date (and price) is more solid. Thanks for those that saw things through to the end, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

October Update

I promised an update each month and I barely pulled this one in under the wire but I'm keeping up with my end of the deal.  Not much exciting has happened since my last post and I have nothing very noteworthy to let everyone in on.  However in three hours we will be filming the final effect shots to be inserted into the movie.  It seems like now the more work we do the farther behind we are.  The aim for the release date is the start of the new year which is a year behind what we were hoping for at the start.  The good news is we have no deadlines that we had to meet so we can take our time to make a better product, the bad news is that any buzz we may have had is dissipating.  Hopefully we can come up with a kick ass promotional campaign with no money that can sell tons of dvds.  Each dvd we sell increases the budget of the next film so I encourage everyone to buy not only a copy for themselves but for all their friends too.  I better end this here as it is quickly turning into a sales pitch.

See you in November

The Beginning of September

As the September 2010 starts I'm reminded of the fact that I was suppose to have the final cut of The Harvestman (which at the time was still untitled) complete by this time last year.  I guess I'm probably not getting hired again as it is a whole year later and I still can't meet my deadline.  I can't even say I have half of it ready this year albeit much closer than I was a year ago only 26 minutes is locked and ready for the sound mix.
Other than that there really isn't too much new going on.  I have spent this last week working on synching audio from three different sources.  Our brilliant idea of shooting a scene with two cameras is turning out to be more work in the long run and it appears that the backup of the audio recordings that were saved for that "just in case" moment has gone the way of the dodo.  Which leaves us with two scenes without an acceptable audio track.  One most likely will get post synched (like those old foreign films) while the fix for the other is still a mystery to me.
On the effects front progress has been slow as two more molds were made and now we are on to the next step which I'll admit that I am not particularly sure what exactly that is but I know that I have to build four boxes for each of the molds.  Which reminds me that I really don't have time to write long winded blog updates so I better get going.
Talk to you next month.

Synching Audio

I honestly can't think of anything more glamorous in the entire exciting world of filmmaking than synching audio.  Going through clip by clip making sure that when the actors on the screen move their lips the audience hears what they're saying.  I could include in this post a long explanation on how this is accomplished but I'm not sure if you readers out there can handle the breath taking frenzy of a step by step how to guide.  However I will say this, on the next movie we do, I am going to have a lecture on proper slating technique.
